In 2022, CHIA commissioned a standard tool for measuring, managing, reporting and interpreting community impact generated by the Australian community housing sector. The result is the first edition of the ESG Reporting Standard for Australian community housing, developed for, and by, the sector.
Thank you to all private and public sector partners who have supported the development of this industry specific framework, putting Australia at the forefront of ESG reporting for the sector globally. Thank you to the team at SGS Economics and Planning, Paxon and Ritterwald Consulting who have led the work.
“It is great to see Australian Community Housing organisations set their own ESG reporting standard, and I hope we can learn from each other in the years ahead. I also hope your reporting journey is as successful and beneficial to your sector as the one here in the UK. Here it has already become the norm amongst the leading housing associations, and so my advice is to sign up quickly and don’t get left behind. “ Brendan Sarsfield, Chair, Sustainability for Housing, UK.

“NHFIC is proud to support the ESG Reporting Standard and partner with CHIA to promote a better understanding of the value that well-built and managed social and affordable rental housing can bring to the community and the economy. This initiative will encourage deeper investor interest, providing further foundations to build social and affordable housing as a viable asset class in Australia.” Nathan Dal Bon, CEO, NHFIC
Implementation
Following the successful launch of the ESG Reporting Standard on 16 March 2023, a critical window of opportunity exists in the first 12-18 months to establish a solid governance approach, promote the Standard and its use by the community housing and lender and investor sectors, and grow the Adopter and Supporter base.
To ensure that the Standard evolves as a widely endorsed and credible tool for communicating sector value, SGS Economics and Planning and RITTERWALD Consulting are supporting CHIA throughout the implementation phase. Please refer to CHIA’s website over the coming weeks for details on upcoming briefings, tutorials and events to support your ESG reporting journey, as well as for details on becoming an early Adopter or Supporter. You may register below to access the Standard.
Please complete this short registration form to access these resources, which are provided free of charge to community housing organisations. Your details will be held by CHIA for internal purposes only and not shared. We may contact you for feedback on the resources and to provide any updates to materials.
